What does it mean to bring outlaws in?
This week in our live discussion, Christy and I explored two very different meanings of the word “outlaw.” One refers to people who are excluded from the protection of the law. The other describes people who act as though they are beyond its reach. A healthy democracy includes everyone within the protection of the law and holds everyone accountable to it.
Our conversation ranged from immigration detention and constitutional protections to broader questions about power, dominance, empathy, and accountability. What happens when some people are treated as less than fully human? What happens when others are allowed to operate without consequences? And what role do ordinary citizens play in restoring balance?
At its heart, this episode is about the rule of law. The Constitution speaks of persons, not just citizens. Due process, fairness, and equal protection are not rewards to be granted to some and withheld from others. Nor should wealth, power, or position place anyone beyond accountability. Democracy works best when everyone is protected by the law, everyone is accountable to the law, and everyone is recognized as fully human.
The challenge before us is not simply political. It is moral and personal. How do we create a society where no one is excluded from the protections of the law and no one is exempt from its responsibilities? And how can we be relentless in advocating for that vision?
