Ah, this is so very true, on so many levels. On a very mundane level, I will buy a Diet Dr. Pepper (which tastes absolutely vile if I'm honest eith myself and sligns with exactly none of my values) if I'm on a long car drive in the afternoon because I'm chasing the feeling of refreshment and stimulation it used to give me when I traveled a lot for work. I feel like you might enjoy the novel The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

Alas, I still like the taste of Diet Coke, although only when diluted with seltzer. Thanks for the novel recommendation! I reserved the book through my library and looking forward to diving in once it becomes available - there's a wait list. I read The Women based on your recommendation and was really moved by it. Thanks for commenting!
