Thank you, Joni - I agree that paying attention to one's physical reactions and choosing to breathe deeply are helpful in re-gaining a rational, open-hearted, listening attitude. Otherwise, it's easy to stifle fear and anger unawarely beneath a surface numbness--as you point out, automatically finding fault.

Yes! Speaking only for myself, I can too easily slip into defensiveness rather than remaining open. If I don't catch myself when my body tenses, I usually can when my mind wanders toward counter-arguments or excuses. I've gotten aware enough that I catch it before my mouth opens to speak. Progress.
